(M) Quality Improvement (QI) and Performance Improvement (PI) projects and research are crucial for resolving challenges in healthcare settings. The primary goal of this QI/PI project is to lower re-hospitalization in individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) at the Lima Memorial Hospital (LMH) by optimizing discharge protocols. (E) QI/PI projects and research studies have different purposes and methodologies to deal with a particular issue. QI/PI projects strive to improve existing processes in a specific setting by applying practical changes and assessing their impacts, resulting in immediate improvements. QI/PI projects are systematic efforts that employ strategic processes and methodologies to evaluate existing data (Faiman, 2021).
At LMH, A QI/PI program can focus on improving discharge protocols, as evidence that adequate discharge protocols can lower hospital readmissions and fatality risks (Miravitlles et al., 2023). The emphasis of QI/PI projects is on locally relevant, practical solutions that can be applied immediately to existing operations, requiring knowledge of the factors driving existing practices (Mohan, 2023). In contrast, research is structured methodological investigation, entailing systematic data gathering, evaluation, and interpretation to address the problem question. Research focuses on generating generalizable information and contributes to extensive evidence through systematic observation and analysis (Hays & McKibben, 2021; Renjith et al., 2021).
QI/PI project and research studies seek to improve healthcare, as QI/PI projects focus on immediate, particular enhancements within an organization, and research provides a deeper comprehension of the problem (Faiman, 2021). (A) For example, research on COPD patients readmission will involve investigating factors leading to the problem using robust methods like longitudinal studies or randomized controlled trials, analyzing data to discover trends, and releasing findings that can impact policy and practice at a more comprehensive level.
A QI/PI initiative to lower COPD patient readmissions at the LMH would lead to improved patient safety. (L) By improving discharge protocols, the QI project can lower COPD re-hospitalization and boost patient results. Whereas research studies offer essential insights into the fundamental causes and wider medical concerns, QI/PI projects are crucial for developing effective solutions to meet healthcare demands.
